Ouch. Something just bit me.

O

Alex looked down at his leg as he ran. Sure enough, he was bleeding. It wasn’t gushing, but it definitely wasn’t a mosquito bite. With his eyes darting back and forth from where he thought he could hear Darcy barking back to the corn fields and his mom and back again to the front porch, he saw Old Tom Brown dashing out the front door of his house with a shotgun in his hands!

“Mom, look!” Alex pointed ahead toward the house where he saw Darcy running toward him, eyes wide open like he’d seen whatever bit Alex and was coming for blood.

Just then, the beast, whatever it was, jumped out of the cornfield on Alex’s right and headed right at his mom. Darcy howled as he ran, trying desperately to get to his family.

“Bang!” Mr. Brown’s shotgun blast sounded like a crash of thunder that spooked everyone, including the mysterious beast, which instantly jumped back into the cornfield and dashed away. “You okay?!” the old man yelled after Alex and Jess.
