Mr. Brown was still running towards Alex and Jess. He looked left and right as he ran. He’d been here before. He’d seen this before.
“I’m okay,” answered Alex. Mr. Darcy was licking his face, which made him feel comforted even if he didn’t know what was going on. His dog felt like home.
“What are we dealing with, Tom?” asked Jess. “This isn’t normal behavior for any animal I’ve seen or studied.” Jess was a part-time vet in their small town. She’d studied at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge years ago when she thought she wanted to go into cardiology, but the birth of Alex had changed everything for her. Now all she wanted was a fun, simple life with her son.
“Maybe we should come inside for a cup of coffee,” said the older man. “I have a bad feeling about this…”
